The iPad Home Screen is customizable. The Dock at the bottom houses your favorite apps and is accessible even when apps are open.
Tips for iPad Organization
- Pin Apps to the Dock: Hold down any app icon until it starts to jiggle. Drag it into the Dock. The Dock can hold up to 13 applications (depending on screen size).
- App Library: Swipe all the way to the right of your Home screens to open the App Library, which automatically categorizes all apps installed on your device.
- Search Anywhere: Swipe downward from the middle of any Home screen to open Spotlight Search. Type the name of an app, a student doc, or a search query to locate it instantly.
🔥 Quick Tip: Drag and drop apps on top of each other to create folders. Give folders logical instructional names like "Grading", "Math Tools", or "Presentations" to stay organized.

Quickly toggle system tools, adjust screen volume, and configure focus modes.
The Control Center provides immediate access to core system tools like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Screen Mirroring, and volume controls.

Screen Mirroring & AirPlay
Project your iPad screen to SmartBoards, Apple TVs, or classroom screens wirelessly.
The true power of the iPad in the classroom is mobility. You are no longer tethered to a desk. You can walk around the classroom, monitoring student behavior, while projecting lessons from your hands.
How to Mirror Your iPad Screen
- Open the Control Center (swipe down from the top-right corner).
- Tap the Screen Mirroring button (two overlapping rectangles).
- Select your classroom's display or Apple TV name from the list.
- If prompted, enter the 4-digit passcode displayed on the classroom screen.

Instructional Tip: While presenting slides or worksheets, walk around the room. Pass the iPad to a student to write their answer on the screen, letting their work display instantly to the entire class.
Split View & Slide Over
Run multiple apps simultaneously for enhanced classroom efficiency.
iPad multitasking allows you to display two applications side-by-side or keep a floating utility window active.
Multitasking Layouts
-
Split View (Side-by-Side)Tap the three dots (...) at the very top center of your active application window. Tap Split View (the half-filled square icon). Select a second app from your Dock or Home screen. The screen splits 50/50. Drag the middle vertical bar to resize the split.
-
Slide Over (Floating App)Tap the three dots (...) at the top of the app window, and select Slide Over (represented by a square with a narrow side panel). The second app floats over the main app. Swipe the side app off the right edge of the screen to hide it; swipe inward from the right edge to bring it back.
Classroom Setup Idea: Keep your digital notebook or slideshow open on the left half of the screen, and open the classroom grading spreadsheet or student roster on the right half to easily record participation.
Apple Pencil & Inking
Annotate documents, grade papers, and use digital whiteboards.
The Apple Pencil transforms the iPad into a precise writing tool. Whether you are using it for handwriting notes, drawing diagrams, or grading student work, digital inking provides a natural writing experience.
Top Instructional Tools for Apple Pencil
-
Apple Freeform (District Whiteboard)Use the pre-installed Freeform app. It features an infinite canvas for brainstorming, drawing diagrams, attaching sticky notes, and importing files. Perfect for collaborative teacher planning or student brainstorms.
-
PDF Annotation in Google Drive / BooksOpen any PDF file. Tap the Markup icon (a pencil tip). Use the pen, highlighter, and ruler tools to draw directly on top of the document. Highlight core passages while discussing the text.
-
Handwritten Notes (Scribble)Write by hand in any standard text field (like the Safari address bar or Google Doc text fields). The iPad automatically converts your handwriting into clean digital text. Turn this on in Settings > Apple Pencil > Scribble.
Document Camera Mode
Turn your iPad's back camera into a portable document camera.
Instead of being confined to a stationary desktop document camera, use your iPad's high-definition back camera to showcase physical student work, worksheets, or laboratory demonstrations wirelessly.
Steps to Use Document Camera Mode
- Begin by Screen Mirroring your iPad to the classroom screen (see the AirPlay guide).
- Open the built-in Camera application on your iPad.
- Select the Photo or Video mode.
- Hold the iPad camera directly over the physical book, object, or worksheet. Alternatively, place the iPad on a document camera stand.
- What you see on your iPad screen is now projected to the entire classroom. Pinch the screen to zoom in closely on small text or details.
Instructional Benefit: You can walk up to a student's desk, mirror your screen, hover your camera over their written paper, and display their writing to the entire classroom as a model example, without having the student walk up to the front board.
