Dr. Xanthy Karamanos serves as the Superintendent of Leonia Public Schools, bringing to the role a deep commitment to student success. Her leadership philosophy is grounded in her invaluable experience as an elementary and special education teacher, where she learned firsthand what truly empowers a student to thrive.

Dr. Karamanos’s journey to the superintendency has been rooted in her dedication to the Leonia community. Since joining the district in July 2020 as Director of Curriculum and Instruction, she has been a driving force for positive change. In August 2021, she was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Schools, and later served as Acting Superintendent from January 2025 before being officially appointed to the role in August 2025. Her leadership is a balance of innovative, research-based practices and a deep understanding of what works for students and staff.

A recognized leader in her field, Dr. Karamanos holds a Doctorate in K-12 Administration from Seton Hall University. Her dissertation, which focused on the influence of professional development on student mathematics performance, reflects her data-driven approach to academic excellence.

Dr. Karamanos's experience as Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction in the Edgewater School District provides a unique insight into the importance of collaboration between our two communities. She believes that by working together, we can create an even stronger, more supportive environment for all our students.

Her vision for Leonia is to prepare each student for a successful future by empowering them to become critical thinkers, compassionate citizens, and lifelong learners. She is committed to fostering a culture of continuous growth and innovation that will prepare all students for a rapidly changing world.
