The Leonia Public School District believes that environmental stewardship is a core component of a 21st-century education.
In partnership with local organizations, we are working to ensure our schools are not just places of learning, but models of sustainable living.

Our elementary students are proving that small hands can make a massive impact.

The Produce Drive: ACS second-graders recently organized a massive fresh produce drive, collecting over 665 lbs of fresh fruits and vegetables for the nonprofit Table to Table. This initiative diverted surplus food to families in need while reducing local food waste.

Junior Gardeners: Students actively manage the ACS garden, using "biomass" fertilizer created overnight by the school's cafeteria food waste dehydrator.

Styrofoam Success: A student-led push, supported by local Girl Scouts, successfully transitioned ACS to a Styrofoam-free cafeteria.
Leonia Middle School: A National "Tree Campus"
At our middle school, students are taking action.

Stewardship Projects: Students participate in hands-on tree care and community engagement projects, learning the molecular science behind water conservation and local ecology.

Tree Campus K-12: Successfully maintained the national Arbor Day Foundation recognition for the second consecutive year.

Molecular Science Labs: Integrated water quality testing of local runoff into the 7th-grade science curriculum, connecting classroom learning to local environmental health.
Leonia High School: Policy & Advocacy
At the high school level, sustainability becomes a matter of policy and professional preparation.

Environmental Club & EC Collaboration: LHS students serve as liaisons to the Borough Environmental Commission, ensuring that student perspectives are included in town-wide green initiatives.

Anti-Idling Campaign: Students led the research and advocacy that resulted in the Board of Education’s official Anti-Idling Resolution, helping to improve air quality during drop-off and pick-up times.

Lions in the Wild
Environmental Club Hudson Field Trip
Environmental Club students visited the Hudson River Field Station for hands-on investigations into microplastics and seining for local aquatic life.
Bronx Zoo Conservation Trip
Students learned sustainability by exploring conservation strategies, human impacts on wildlife, and solutions for urban ecological challenges.
